Blog as if It Matters

Author: Ted Demopoulos

Beginning bloggers often feel their blogging isn't very important until they build up their readership. "No one's reading my blog except my friends," is a common thought.

I suggest you blog as if it matters from the very beginning! Although your audience may be small initially, each individual reader may be extremely important. A single reader can tell others about your blog, perhaps through linking, email, or word of mouth. A single reader can hire you based on what you write. A single reader can even marry you and more!

When I first started blogging, one of my first non-friend/non-family readers hired me for a few thousand dollars to speak at their annual conference! I really thought my blogging didn't matter much yet as my readership was very low, but obviously I was wrong.

Lots of readers are great, but when you first start blogging you'll have a very small audience. Remember that each person matters. They may give you money, friendship, valuable feedback, and much more.

Hopefully you'll eventually build a large audience -- compromised of individuals each of whom is important! If your audience doesn't skyrocket, remember that there are plenty of great and successful blogs that have 25 or less readers a day. It's more important to have readers that share your passion and interests than to have enormous numbers of semi-interested readers.

Also remember that your earlier posts will still be available in the future when you have a larger readership, and the search engines may send traffic to your older posts. You older posts never go away. I have one post from over 2 years ago that gets several visitors a day courtesy of Google.
